Sergei Rachmaninoff was a resident of Lucerne, at least for a time. If you take a motorboat from right in front of the KKL, you can be in Hertenstein in just a few minutes. Rachmaninoff, who had fled his Russian homeland following the October Revolution, had a luxurious villa built here in the 1930s (which he dubbed "Villa Senar"). Between his extensive tours, he found peace and quiet here until 1939 -- and was finally able to compose again.

For the occasion of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra's concert with Riccardo Chailly and Beatrice Rana, we have arranged a package offer that allows you to combine a visit to Rachmaninoff's Villa Senar with attendance at the evening's concert by the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. The offer is valid only on 19 August.

  • Boat: You can take the ferry from Bahnhofsquai leaving at 2.12 pm. You will arrive in Hertenstein at 2.43 pm. Please note that the ferry ticket is not included in the package price. You can purchase your ferry ticket online or directly on the ferry itself. (A timetable and list of ticket prices can be found on the website.)

  • Villa Senar: After the short ferry trip, visit Rachmaninoff's Lucerne home. The guided tour of this remarkably modern building starts at 3.15 pm. From the pier where the ferry docks in Hertenstein, you can reach Villa Senar via a 20-minute walk.

  • Boat: At 5.14 pm you can catch a ferry that goes directly from Hertenstein to Lucerne, where you will arrive at 5.47 pm.

  • Introduction to the Concert: at 18.30 with Susanne Stähr (KKL Luzern, Auditorium, in German)
  • Lucerne Festival: The conclusion and highlight of the day will of course be Rachmaninoff's music! Starting at 7.30 p.m., enjoy a peak musical experience with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra under the direction of Riccardo Chailly. The program includes Rachmaninoff's tone poem The Rock, the Symphony No. 1 in D minor, Op. 13 and the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43. The Italian virtuoso Beatrice Rana is the soloist.
