The German pianist Johanna Summer, who was born in Plauen in 1995, began classical piano lessons at the age of seven. She later studied jazz piano at the conservatories in Dresden and Cologne. In her work, she combines both worlds by placing classical music in an improvisational context. Johanna Summer has played in the German National Jazz Orchestra and performs both as a soloist and in various chamber music formations, such as in a duo with the saxophonist Jakob Manz. She has received such distinctions as the Young Munich Jazz Prize (2018) and the Essen “Jazz Pott” Prize (2022) and won second prize at the eastPLUGGED Junior Awards in 2019. Her solo albums Schumann Kaleidoskop and Resonanzen, which are on the ACT label, were nominated for the German Jazz Award and the Opus Klassik.
