Enrique Mazzola

Enrique Mazzola, who was born in Barcelona, grew up in Milan, where he first studied violin and piano, and later conducting and composition at the Giuseppe Verdi Conservatory. He made his debut at the Maggio Musicale in Florence in 1993; from 1999 to 2003, he served as Music Director of the Cantiere Inter­nazionale d’Arte in Montepulciano. For seven years, from 2012 to 2019, he led the Orchestre national d’Île-de-France; since the start of the 2021–22 season, he has served as Music Director of Lyric Opera of Chicago, which has extended his contract through 2031. In the 2026–27 season, he will lead new productions there of Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, Massenet’s Hérodiade, and Verdi’s La traviata. Mazzola maintained close ties to the Bregenz Festival for many years, even serving as conductor-in-residence from 2022 to 2024. At the Deutsche Oper Berlin, he served as Principal Guest Conductor from 2018 to 2025, where he developed a Meyerbeer cycle. In addition, Mazzola regularly appears at the world’s major opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he will conduct Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda in the upcoming season; the Dutch National Opera; the Opéra national de Paris; the Vienna Staatsoper and Berlin Staatsoper; and Zurich Opera. He conducted Offenbach’s Orphée aux Enfers at the Salzburg Festival and has also been a frequent guest at the Glyndebourne Festival and in Aix-en-Provence. Mazzola has also made a name for himself in the field of contemporary music: he conducted the world premieres of Alberto Colla’s Il processo at La Scala in Milan, Azio Corghi’s Isabella at the Festival di Pesaro, Luca Lombardi’s Il re nudo at the Opera di Roma, and Arnaldo de Felice’s Medusa at the Bavarian Staatsoper. On the concert stage, Mazzola has collaborated with, among others, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, the Oslo Philharmonic, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre national du Capitole de Toulouse, and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra.
