Her music is freely improvised like jazz but sounds more like classical music. Rather than take jazz standards as the starting point for her pianistic excursions, Johanna Summer draws on classical piano pieces by composers from Bach and Schubert to Scriabin and Ligeti, reimagining it in a remarkably inventive way. “I don’t play these pieces in the conventional sense — the way they were composed — but improvise with the material contained in them, trying to look at it from different perspectives,” as the young German pianist explains her approach. Sometimes she “sinks her teeth” into particular motifs; at others she sets her own ideas as a counterpoint to the original. But whatever she does, it always results in something new and idiosyncratic: “Music that is stylistically located somewhere in between, drawing on classical music but in the spirit of jazz. Music that breaks free from the composition written down in a score as well as from conventional jazz harmonies,” as Der Spiegel remarks. “This woman is a giant!” enthuses Igor Levit, who immediately invited Johanna Summer back following her inspiring performance at the inaugural Piano Fest.

Cloakroom
There are coat checkrooms not only in the basement, but also on the 2nd and 4th floors. Handbags up to a size of 42 x 29.7 x 29.7 cm (A3) may be taken into the concert hall. All larger bags and luggage as well as other bulky items must be checked for a fee of CHF 5.00 per item. For security reasons, coats and jackets may also not be taken into the concert hall and can be left at the checkroom free of charge.
Wheelchair seating
The main concert hall of the KKL Lucerne has six wheelchair spaces available on special terms. Accompanying persons cannot be assured of obtaining a seat in the same price range or in the general vicinity.

Access to venues | Late admission
The main KKL Concert Hall opens 30 minutes before the beginning of the concert. For the sake of the musicians and the audience, latecomers will not be admitted until intermission or at the discretion of the Concert Hall staff. In certain instances concerts will have no intermission and allow no latecomers.
If the concert is missed on account of late arrival, tickets will not be refunded.
