Bass-baritone Vuyani Mlinde began studying voice in his native South Africa before winning a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music in London and at the Benjamin Britten International Opera School. From 2007 to 2009 he was a member of the Young Artist Programme of the Royal Opera, Covent Garden; in 2010 he joined the ensemble of Frankfurt Opera, where Mlinde has so far appeared in productions of Mozart’s Figaro and The Magic Flute, Verdi’s Don Carlo, Puccini’s Tosca, and Ildebrando Pizzetti’s Murder in the Cathedral. As a concert performer, Mlinde also has such high-profile credits as performances of Haydn’s The Creation under John Eliot Gardiner at Carnegie Hall in New York and Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, as well as at the Pisa Festival; he has also performed Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony with the London Symphony Orchestra, likewise conducted by Gardiner, in London, Paris, and Madrid.
