British baritone Stephen Gadd initially graduated in engineering from Cambridge before taking up vocal studies with Patrick McGuigan at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. Today he regularly appears at the Royal Opera House in London, English National Opera, and the Glyndebourne Festival, as well as on the stages of renowned companies on the continent. He has undertaken the role of Paolo in Schreker’s Die Gezeichneten for the Salzburg Festival, which also engaged him to sing Count Almaviva in Mozart’s Figaro for its Japanese tour. He has performed in Hindemith’s Cardillac at the Opéra National de Paris, as Germont Père in La traviata at the Norske Opera in Oslo, and as Sonora in La fanciulla del West at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam. As a concert singer, Gadd performs a repertoire extending from Handel and Bach to William Walton, Benjamin Britten, and Michael Tippett.
