Matthias Bamert, who was Intendant of the Internationale Musikfestwochen Luzern from 1992 to 1998, celebrated his 75th birthday in July. He began his conducting career in the United States with such ensembles as the Cleveland Orchestra; from 1977 to 1983 led the Basel Radio Symphony Orchestra. He helmed the Musica Nova Festival in Glasgow from 1985 to 1990 and was Music Director of the London Mozart Player from 1993 to 2000; subsequent leadership positions have been with the West Australian Symphony and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Bamert has guest conducted the major orchestras in London; the Los Angeles Philharmonic; the Pittsburgh, Montreal, and Sydney Symphony Orchestras; the Orchestre de Paris; and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic. In 2017 he was appointed Principal Guest Conductor of the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra in South Korea. His artistic work is documented on more than 80 multiple-award-winning CDs.
