Edgardo Rocha, a native of Uruguay, studied voice, piano, and conducting in Montevideo before moving to Italy in 2008, where he continued his training with teachers including Rockwell Blake as he prepared for his career as a tenor. His repertoire focuses primarily on the bel canto era, and he is especially renowned for his portrayal of the Count in Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia. Rocha has appeared at the Bavarian Staatsoper, Zurich Opera, the Salzburg Festival, La Scala in Milan, Dresden’s Semperoper, the Grand Théâtre de Genève, and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. He maintains a close association with the Vienna Staatsoper, where in the 2024-25 season he appeared as Don Ottavio in Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Ferrando in Così fan tutte, and Ernesto in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale. Rocha also regularly champions rare works, including Fernando Paër’s opera Leonora, which he presented last season in Chicago.
