The baritone Alex Ashworth received his earliest musical training as a Choral Scholar at St John’s College in Cambridge before continuing studies with Mark Wildman, Clara Taylor, and Julius Drake at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He is now active as an oratorio, lieder, and opera singer. Recent credits include Weber’s Der Freischütz at the Opéra Comique in Paris and Aeneas in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas under Trevor Pinnock at the Hallé Festival. He was engaged by Sir Colin Davis for performances of Berlioz’s L’Enfance du Christ andby Sir Roger Norrington for the title role in Haydn’s Il ritorno di Tobia; he has also collaborated with Sir John Eliot Gardiner in Handel’s Israel in Egypt, Duruflé’s Requiem, Stravinsky’s Oedipus Rex, and Monteverdi’s Vespers. Additional credits have taken Ashworth to the Glyndebourne and Aldeburgh Festivals, to the Scottish and Welsh National Opera companies, and to the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.
