Trained by Ulrich Koch in Freiburg im Breisgau, Wolfram Christ joined the Berlin Philharmonic in 1978 as principal violist and remained there until 1999. He appeared more than sixty times as a soloist under such conductors as Karajan, Abbado, Haitink, Maazel, Mehta, and Ozawa. Professor of viola at the Conservatory in Freiburg since 1999, he has played principal viola with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra since 2003. Christ is also an orchestra conductor and has led such ensembles as the Orchestra of the Maggio Musicale, the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, the Simón Bolívar Orchestra, and the Johannesburg Philharmonic and the New Japan Philharmonic Orchestras. He was Principal Conductor of the Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester from 2004 to 2008 and Principal Guest Conductor of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra from 2009 to 2013. Christ is closely associated with the Orchestra di Padova e del Veneto, since 2023 as conductor-in-residence.
