Wolfram Christ

Wolfram Christ, who received his training under Ulrich Koch in Freiburg, Germany, became principal violist of the Berlin Philharmonic in 1978, remaining in that position until 1999. During this period he performed more than sixty solo concertos with the orchestra under such conductors as Karajan, Abbado, Maazel, Haitink, and Ozawa. He was among the founding members of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA in 2003 and has performed with the ensemble every summer since. Christ himself has been engaged as an orchestral leader since 1995. He has conducted such ensembles as the Royal Danish Orchestra, the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, the German Radio Philharmonic, the Sinfónica de la Juventud Venezolana, and the Orchestra Mozart. From 2004 to 2008 he held the chief position with the Kurpfälzisches Kammerorchester Mannheim, and from 2009 to 2013 he served as Principal Guest Conductor of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra. Since 1999 Christ has been Professor of Viola at the Freiburg Music Academy.
