Thomas Ebenstein
Vita
The tenor Thomas Ebenstein, who is from Carinthia, studied at the University of Music in Vienna with Helena Łazarska. Originally with the Komische Oper Berlin ensemble, he has been a member of the Vienna Staatsoper ensemble since 2012, most recently appearing there as the Witch in Hansel and Gretel and as the Dancing Master in Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos. In the 2024-25 season, he performed Monostatos in Mozart’s The Magic Flute at New York’s Metropolitan Opera and the Captain in Wozzeck at the Opéra de Lyon. Guest credits include at La Scala in Milan; the Bavarian, Berlin, and Hamburg Staatsoper companies; the Semperoper in Dresden; the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden; the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées; the Salzburg Festival; the Grand Théâtre de Genève; and the Verbier Festival. His repertoire encompasses buffo and character roles and ranges from early Baroque to operetta. Ebenstein is also intensively engaged in lieder performance.
