Raphaël Schenkel, who comes from Hechingen in the Swabian Alps, began playing clarinet at the age of seven, studied with Manfred Lindner in Essen, and completed his training with Karl-Heinz Steffens, Wenzel Fuchs, and Ralf Forster in Berlin. He acquired his first orchestral experience at the Academy of the Konzerthaus Orchestra Berlin and the Berlin Philharmonic’s Karajan Academy. Schenkel has been bass clarinet with the Bremen Philharmonic Orchestra since 2010 and a member of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra since 2017; he also performs as a substitute with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. He also plays chamber music with Quatuor Hermès, the Eliot Quartet, and the Amaryllis Quartet, among others. Raphaël Schenkel directs the Klang-Labor Hechingen Festival, which he founded in 2012 and which aims to inspire children and young people from rural areas with music.
