The flutist Pirmin Grehl, who was born in Rhineland-Palatinate, studied with Renate Greiss-Armin and Jacques Zoon. He won the Carl Nielsen Competition in 2002 and, in 2004, second prize and the Brüder Busch Prize at the ARD Music Competition, which in 2006 gave an award to his wind quintet Chantilly. Grehl spent 15 years as principal flute with the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, performing with the Chamber Orchestra of Europe as well. He has appeared as a soloist with the Bavarian Radio Symphony, Stuttgart Radio Symphony, and New Japan Philharmonic Orchestras, among others. Alongside his classical concert career, he regularly performs with the Swiss klezmer band Kol Simcha. His recording of works by Jonathan Harvey garnered the Diapason d’or. Following several years teaching at the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin, he was appointed Professor of Flute at the Lucerne School of Music in 2010 and at the Karlsruhe University of Music in 2017.
