Born in Erlangen, Germany, Manuel Kastl is pursuing a two-pronged career:  having studied medical physics, he conducts research at the Helmholtz Center in Munich; he is at the same time an internationally renowned violinist. Supported by the German National Academic Foundation, he  studied with Ulf Klausenitzer and Daniel Gaede in Nuremberg and with Igor Ozim in Salzburg. Kastl was concertmaster of the German Bundesjugendorchester and the European Union Youth Orchestra and graduated from the Academy of the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Claudio Abbado engaged him to join the Orchestra Mozart in 2006 and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra in 2011. He was additionally appointed first concertmaster of the Nuremberg State Philharmonic in 2011. Manuel Kastl also works with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra and appears regularly as a guest concertmaster with the Munich Philharmonic and the Bavarian State Orchestra.
