Born in 1965 in Zug, the clarinetist and composer Claudio Puntin initially trained as a goldsmith before studying music in Cologne and Rotterdam. Learning from Sergiu Celibidache was also a formative experience. He has performed in more than 80 countries, working with such varied artists as Carla Bley, Fred Frith, Sidsel Endresen, Hermeto Pascoal, Steve Reich, Steffen Schorn, Steve Swallow, and Ricardo Villalobos and with such ensembles as the Ensemble Modern, the ensemble Musikfabrik, and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. At present he is especially involved in his work with the Trio Ambiq. As a composer he has written music for film and theater productions, among them Sunset in Venice, winner of the German Short Film Prize in 1998. Puntin has garnered numerous awards, including the Golden Amadeus at the Musik-Kreativ Competition in Frankfurt (1993) and the WDR Jazz Prize (2004).
