The Italian bass Ildebrando d’Arcangelo studied in Bologna and won the Toti Dal Monte Competition twice, in 1989 and 1991. He made his Salzburg Festival debut in 1996 as Figaro in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro, later appearing there as Leporello and in the title role of Don Giovanni. His career has taken him to major opera houses in Berlin, Vienna, Paris, London, Milan, and New York. He has worked with such distinguished conductors as Claudio Abbado, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Bernard Haitink, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Sir Antonio Pappano, Tugan Sokhiev, and Sir Georg Solti. Most recently, d’Arcangelo appeared as Bartolo in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro at Dresden’s Semperoper, sang Oroveso in Bellini’s Norma at the Vienna Staatsoper, portrayed Count Almaviva in Le nozze di Figaro at La Scala in Milan, performed Verdi’s Requiem with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and returned to the Salzburg Festival as Publio in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito.
