Christian Dierstein, who was born in 1965, completed his music studies with Bernhard Wulff in Freiburg, Gaston Sylvestre in Paris, and Wassilios Papadopoulos in Mannheim. Since 1988, he has been a percussionist with ensemble recherche, and he has been playing with pianist Nicolas Hodges and saxophonist Marcus Weiss as part of the Trio Accanto since 1994. In 2010-11, the
European Concert Hall Organization presented him as one of its Rising Stars, with performances at the major European concert halls. Dierstein is intensively involved with non-European music and free improvisation. He has recorded numerous CDs, including solo albums featuring works by Brian Ferneyhough, Helmut Lachenmann, Mathias Spahlinger, and Claude Vivier. Since 2001, Dierstein has been professor of percussion and new chamber music at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel; he also taught at the International Summer Courses for New Music in Darmstadt.
