Brian Cummings, who studied with Paul Elliott, Paul Hillier, and Nigel North at Indiana University, also took part in the world premiere of El Niño in 2000 and has gone on to perform the work under Esa-Pekka Salonen, Robert Spano, David Robertson, Tõnu Kaljuste, and John Adams himself. As a countertenor soloist, he focuses as well on music of the Baroque era. Cummings has collaborated with such ensembles as the Theatre of Voices, Les Arts Florissants and Les Muses Galantes and has appeared at the Washington Festival and the Bloomington Early Music Festival. In 2010 he performed the title hero in a new production of Handel’s Giulio Cesare at the Opera Fuoco conducted by David Stern. Cummings also regularly works with the director Timothy Nelson; examples include productions of Charpentier’s David et Jonathas, Handel’s Jephtha, and Cavalli’s Didone.
