Andrew Tortise

English tenor Andrew Tortise received his musical training as a choirboy at Wells Cathedral before graduating in vocal studies from Trinity College in Cambridge. In 2004 he made his operatic debut as Apollo in Handel’s Semele at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées in Paris; in the following year came his debut at the Salzburg Festival, where he performed Marzio in Mozart’s Mitridate. Tortise was subsequently engaged to appear at the Opéra National de Lyon, the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, Welsh National Opera, and the Glyndebourne Festival. In June 2013 he makes his debut at London’s Royal Opera House singing in Britten’s Gloriana. Among his most recent concert engagements are Britten’s Les Illuminations with Ivor Bolton, Haydn’s Missa in tempore belli with Bernard Labadie, Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the Gabrieli Consort, and a Bach-Scarlatti program with the Al Ayre Español.
