In the summer of 2003, Claudio Abbado and Festival Director Michael Haefliger founded a unique "Orchestra of Friends" that unites internationally acclaimed soloists, chamber musicians, and music teachers, as well as members of top European orchestras: the Lucerne Festival Orchestra. Riccardo Chailly has been its principal conductor since 2016.
