Founded in 1876, the Basel Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest orchestras in Switzerland. Its has been associated with such significant artistic figures at the podium as Johannes Brahms, Felix Weingartner, Gustav Mahler, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Otto Klemperer, Pierre Boulez, Armin Jordan, Mario Venzago, and Dennis Russell Davies. Since 2016 Ivor Bolton has served as Music Director; Michał Nesterowicz is Principal Guest Conductor. The orchestra offers its own concert series in Basel as well as regular tours, both domestic and abroad, with trips to Russia and the Far East in recent years. On the agenda for October 2017 is a tour to England, which will include appearances in London, Edinburgh, Manchester, and Birmingham. The Basel Symphony Orchestra has given the world premieres of numerous significant major works of the 20th century; its most recent recording is of Stravinsky’s Petrushka conducted by Dennis Russell Davies.
