The violist Raphael Sachs, who was born in 1980, comes from Waldshut in Germany’s southern Black Forest. He first studied at the Basel Music Academy with Hatto Beyerle and then moved to Wolfram Christ at the Conservatory in Freiburg im Breisgau. He acquired formative experience with a scholarship to the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, where Wilfried Strehle taught him. Sachs received his first permanent engagement with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. He was appointed deputy principal violist with the SWR Symphony Orchestra Baden-Baden and Freiburg in 2010 and continues to hold this position following the 2016 merger of this orchestra with the RSO Stuttgart to form the SWR Symphony Orchestra. He has also been a member of the Lucerne Festival Orchestra since 2006. A passionate chamber musician, Sachs has worked with Gidon Kremer, Sol Gabetta, Yefim Bronfman, and Lars Vogt, among others.
