A native of Hannover, the mezzo-soprano Katja Pieweck completed her training with Judith Beckmann at the Hamburg Music Academy and took master classes with Elio Battaglia, Brigitte Fassbaender, and James Wagner. In 1997 she became a member of the opera studio of Hamburg Staatsoper and, two years later, of the company’s permanent ensemble. Pieweck also performs select roles from the soprano repertoire, such as Mozart’s Donna Elvira and the First Lady in The Magic Flute and Verdi’s Alice Ford. In the 2013-14 season she will make her role debuts as Beethoven’s Leonore and as Strauss’s Ariadne. Credits have also included the Bavarian and Berliner Staatsoper companies as well as the Berlin Philharmonic, where she participated in Janácek’s Jenufa under Simon Rattle.
