The Australian-born Derek Welton initially studied linguistics and German in Melbourne before training as a bass-baritone at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. His repertoire spans from Baroque to contemporary music, and he is especially in demand as a Wagner performer. He has appeared as Klingsor and Amfortas in Parsifal at the Bayreuth Festival; at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, he has sung Wotan and Wanderer in the Ring cycle, the title role in Der fliegende Holländer, and King Marke in Tristan und Isolde. Welton has also appeared at the Vienna, the Bavarian, and Hamburg State Operas; the Opéra national de Paris; Lyric Opera of Chicago; Madrid’s Teatro Real; and the Royal Opera in London. In the 2025-26 season, he makes his debut at Zurich Opera as Pizarro in Beethoven’s Fidelio. His recordings include various operas on CD and DVD, as well as an album of songs by Vaughan Williams.
