Kicking off a major cycle: Riccardo Chailly and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra concentrate on Sergei Rachmaninoff, who, after emigrating from Russia, lived on Lake Lucerne in the 1930s, where he enjoyed an artistically productive phase. It was here that he wrote his Third Symphony, an exuberant feast of musical fantasy. Chailly combines this work with two other Rachmaninoff hits: the melancholy Vocalise and the Third Piano Concerto, a boldly virtuosic adventure for the instrument. The soloist is Denis Matsuev.
