    Les stagiaires de l’académie créeront trois œuvres nouvelles à leur concert final : un concerto pour violoncelle de Luca Francesconi, avec en soliste l’« artiste étoile » Jay Campbell, et deux partitions orchestrales composées dans le cadre des Roche Young Commissions, sous la houlette du directeur de l’académie Wolfgang Rihm, par deux représentants de la jeune génération, la Suédoise Lisa Streich et le Britannique Matthew Kaner. Au programme figurera également un « père fondateur » de la musique moderne, Béla Bartók, avec son ballet pantomime Le Prince de bois qui parle de transfert d’identité. Pour attirer l’attention d’une Princesse lointaine, un Prince confectionne avec son bâton une réplique de lui-même qu’il brandit le plus haut possible. Las ! la jeune femme s’éprend de la réplique et non du vrai Prince. Ce conte symbolise, selon son auteur Béla Balász, « la tragédie cruelle et si fréquente de l’artiste : l’œuvre qu’il a créée devient sa rivale. »


    Founded in 2003 by the composer and conductor Pierre Boulez and the Festival’s Executive and Artistic Director Michael Haefliger, the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY is an internationally unique training institution devoted to the music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Some 130 young, highly gifted musicians from all over the world have convened there every summer since then to extensively study contemporary scores and Modernist classics in daily rehearsals, workshops, and lessons and subsequently perform them. More than 1,000 graduates have attended the Academy over the past 14 years, many of whom have even participated for several summers. Since 2016 the German composer Wolfgang Rihm has served as Artistic Director, with Matthias Pintscher as Principal Conductor alongside him. They are supported by a team of internationally renowned performers of contemporary music who work as instrumental coaches. Under this new leadership, the Academy has expanded its offerings. In 2017 the Composer Seminar is taking place for a second time; here young composers discuss their works with Wolfgang Rihm and have a practical opportunity to rehearse them with ensembles of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ALUMN. The Master Class in Conducting was expanded into a Conducting Fellowship that offers its students a chance to follow the work of the Academy over a three-week period. This summer the Orchestra of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY will perform three symphony concerts under Matthias Pintscher and Heinz Holliger and will also open the Special Event Day on the theme of “Identity” with John Luther Adams’s Sila. Selected ensembles will also be represented in chamber music in a variety of formations on that day; in addition, they will perform works by composer-in-residence Michel van der Aa, will collaborate with artiste étoile Patricia Kopatchinskaja, and will appear as part of the 40min series.

    Matthias Pintscher

    Matthias Pintscher has been closely associated with the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY since 2016 as its Principal Conductor. Born in 1971 in Marl in North Rhine-Westphalia, he regards composing and conducting as complementary spheres of his artistic work. He studied composition with Giselher Klebe and Manfred Trojahn; Hans Werner Henze was also among his mentors, as was Peter Eötvös, who additionally taught him conducting. Pintscher quickly advanced to become one of the most successful composers of his generation: premieres of his music theater works Thomas Chatterton and L’Espace dernier were given by the Dresden Semperoper and the Opéra National de Paris, respectively, and his orchestral works have been premiered by the Berlin and New York Philharmonics, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, and the Cleveland Orchestra. As a conductor, Pintscher commands a wide repertoire, with a special focus on works of the 19th and 20th centuries. He has conducted such ensembles as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Berlin, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia; he is artist-in-association with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. In 2013 Pintscher began his tenure as Music Director of the Ensemble intercontemporain in Paris, with whom he undertook an Asian tour in the 2016-17 season. He served as composer-in-residence and artist in focus at the new Hamburg Elbphilharmonie for its inaugural season. This position included a performance with the Orchestra of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY, as well as the world premiere in April 2017 of his latest work, Shirim, with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach. Pintscher teaches composition at the Juilliard School in New York.

    LUCERNE FESTIVAL debut on 13 August 2010 with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in a program of works by Fauré, Chausson, Wagner, and Ravel.

    Gregor A. Mayrhofer

    Gregor A. Mayrhofer, Jahrgang 1987, studierte in seiner Heimatstadt München, Paris und Düsseldorf bei Jan Müller-Wieland, Frédéric Durieux, Rüdiger Bohn und Manfred Trojahn. Entscheidende Impulse erhielt er zudem von Peter Eötvös, Kenneth Kiesler und Johannes Schlaefli. Derzeit ist er Assistent beim Ensemble intercontemporain und setzt seine Ausbildung bei Alan Gilbert an der New Yorker Juilliard School fort. Als Dirigent und Komponist hat er u. a. mit dem SWR Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg, der Rumänischen Staatsphilharmonie und dem Ensemble Musikfabrik zusammengearbeitet. 2013 leitete er die Festspiele der Opera Mauritius. Mayrhofer wurde mit dem «Tassilo-Kulturpreis» der Süddeutschen Zeitung ausgezeichnet und erhielt Kompositionsaufträge u. a. von der Bayerischen Staatsoper, dem Bayerischen Rundfunk und dem Ensemble intercontemporain.

    Jay Campbell

    The America cellist Jay Campbell, who is “artiste étoile” at the 2017 LUCERNE FESTIVAL, was born in 1989 in Berkeley and studied at the Juilliard School in New York. He acquired important experience in the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY, where he performed as a soloist in Boulez’s Messagesquisses and Pli selon pli under the composer’s direction. In 2013 he receive an Avery Fisher Career Grant and made his debut with the New York Philharmonic, which engaged him as curator for the “Ligeti Forward” series at the 2016 NY Phil Biennial. Campbell has worked with such composers as Elliott Carter, Matthias Pintscher, and Kaija Saariaho; John Zorn has written more than a dozen works for him. Concert credits include at Carnegie Hall in New York, the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Marlboro Festival, and the Heidelberger Frühling. He is part of a piano trio with Stefan Jackiw and Conrad Tao, and he is also a member of the JACK Quartet.
