    Pour le grand finale de la « Journée spéciale » du festival,
    l’Ensemble de la LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY recevra le renfort de plusieurs chanteuses et d’un trio de jazz. Car le programme sera confié à une personnalité du jazz orchestral, la musicienne américaine Maria Schneider. Il ne faut pas s’attendre pour autant au traditionnel son de big band. Maria Schneider, qui a fait de fructueuses expériences comme assistante de Gil Evans avant de fonder son propre orchestre en 1992, a développé sa propre palette de couleurs, une harmonie expressive et une écriture diaphane de musique de chambre. C’est ce que montrent les deux œuvres qu’elle présentera à Lucerne, inspirées de poèmes de Ted Kooser et de Carlos Drummond de Andrades. Elles ont été récompensées en 2014 par trois Grammy, de manière significative dans la catégorie « eilleure composition classique contemporaine ».

    It was in the summer of 2004, that Pierre Boulez and Michael Haefliger founded the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY – thus establishing an educational campus devoted exclusively to new music. Every summer since then, some 130 young, highly gifted musicians from all around the world are given the opportunity to study contemporary scores and modernist classics in detail through daily rehearsals, workshops, and lessons and then to present their insights in performance. Serving as instructors are members of the Ensemble intercontemporain from Paris, one of the most renowned ensembles in the field of contemporary music. Besides the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY Orchestra, in which all of the students are consolidated, various additional ensembles join together to present their own concert programs. Individual artistic initiative is also encouraged, such as in the series titled LUCERNE FESTIVAL 40min, LUCERNE FESTIVAL Lounge, and at the Buvette, in which Academy participants present projects they have developed on their own. It’s not only instrumentalists who benefit from the Academy’s praxis-oriented training – the institution is also a prime choice for conductors and composers. Each year offers a master class in conducting; in 2014 it will be led by Heinz Holliger, who will initiate participants into the secrets of the métier with works of Claude Debussy and Bernd Alois Zimmermann. In addition to that commissions are given to young composers. In the summer of 2014, the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY presents a focus on vocal symphonic music with its performance of Luciano Berio’s Coro and is therefore expanding its training mandate to 40 highly talented young singers. Selected members of the newly formed LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY Chorus will also have an opportunity to take a master class in voice with “artiste étoile” Barbara Hannigan.

    Maria Schneider

    The American composer and bandleader Maria Schneider, who was born in 1960 in Windom, Minnesota, acquired significant experience as an assistant to such figures as Gil Evans before founding her own Maria Schneider Orchestra, with which she recorded her first album in 1994, Evanescence. Since then she has performed around the globe with this hand-picked ensemble while also working regularly with other groups. Her music combines styles and genres: she has been commissioned by such varied institutions as the Carnegie Hall Jazz Orchestra, the American Dance Festival, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Kronos Quartet. Her CDs have garnered numerous awards, including five Grammy Awards (tellingly, spanning the two categories Jazz and Classical). Maria Schneider, who is also involved in the fields of copyright protection and digital rights, released The Thompson Fields this past spring.

    Lucy Fitz Gibbon

    The soprano Lucy Fitz Gibbon, who comes from Davis, California, is a graduate of Yale University, the Glenn Gould School of the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, and the Bard College Conservatory. It was there that she met Dawn Upshaw, who suggested her for this evening’s concert with Maria Schneider. She is interested on the one hand in the neglected early music repertoire, including works by Barbara Strozzi, Francesco Sacrati, and Agostino Agazzari, which she has performed. On the other hand she collaborates with such contemporary composers as John Harbison, Sheila Silver, and Pauline Oliveros. On the opera stage she appeared with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra as Miles in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw, and in the concert hall she has performed with the Tanglewood Music Center Orchestra, the American Classical Orchestra, and the American Symphony Orchestra. In 2016 she appears at the Marlboro Festival.

    Kelly Newberry

    The Peruvian-American mezzo-soprano Kelly Newberry was born in Simi Valley, California, and studied with Jane Randolph at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music; at the Bard College Conservatory she completed the Vocal Arts Program directed by Dawn Upshaw, who also selected her for this evening’s debut at LUCERNE FESTIVAL. Kelly Newberry’s repertoire includes such Mozart roles as the Second Lady in The Magic Flute and Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro, as well as Amastre in Handel’s Serse. In March 2016 she performed the role of Jennie in the New York premiere of Oliver Knussen’s Higglety Pigglety Pop!. Under Ragnar Bohlin, the Music Director of the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, she took part in a performance of Duruflé’s Requiem. As a winner of the Colburn Fellowship, she was a participant in SongFest, working there with Martin Katz, Jake Heggie, Susanne Mentzer, and Graham Johnson.

    Diana Newman

    Die amerikanische Sopranistin Diana Newman absolvierte ihre Gesangsausbildung an der Thornton School of Music der University of Southern California, wo sie von Elizabeth Hynes unterrichtet wurde. Ausserdem absolvierte sie Kurse am Steans Music Institute des Ravinia Festivals, an der Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, am Fall Island Vocal Arts Seminar und am Aspen Opera Theater Center. In New York nahm sie an einem Meisterkurs von Christa Ludwig teil. Seit der Saison 2015/16 ist Diana Newman Mitglied im Ryan Opera Center, dem Opernstudio der Chicago Lyric Opera. Dort wirkte sie bereits bei Aufführungen von Rossinis La Cenerentola und Strauss’ Rosenkavalier mit; in der kommenden Spielzeit wird sie in Wagners Rheingold, Massenets Don Quichotte, Mozarts Zauberflöte und Bizets Carmen zu erleben sein. Diana Newmans Repertoire umfasst überdies Partien wie Monteverdis Poppea, Lauretta in Puccinis Gianni Schicchi, Miranda in Lee Hoibys The Tempest und Belisa in Conrad Susas The Love of Don Perlimplin. Bei einer konzertanten Aufführung von Verdis Rigoletto mit dem Los Angeles Philharmonic unter Gustavo Dudamel übernahm sie den Part des Pagen. Im Konzertsaal interpretierte Diana Newman Bach-Kantaten, Mozarts Exsultate, jubilate, Barbers Knoxville: Summer of 1915, Mahlers Vierte Sinfonie, Brittens Les Illuminations und George Crumbs Madrigal Book IV. Ausserdem ist sie in mehreren Filmmusiken zu hören, so in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Sex and the City 2 sowie The Spirit

    Jean-Paul Brodbeck

    The pianist and composer Jean-Paul Brodbeck, who was born in 1974, was only 15 when Lionel Hampton invited him to the stage to “jam.” After studying jazz with Hans Feigenwinter, he earned a degree in classical piano under Peter Efler at the Conservatory of his native Basel and subsequently used his stylistic flexibility to play in a wide assortment of ensembles. He founded the experimental hip-hop band Chapter 12 with Andy Scherrer, was a member of the Wolfgang Muth-spiel Quartet, and has appeared onstage with Billy Hart, David Liebman, Herbie Mann, Ben Street, Nat Su, and Nils Wogram. Since 2009 he has been collaborating increasingly with Johannes Enders. In addition to his work as a sideman, Brodbeck plays in his trio. He teaches at the Lucerne University of Music and in 2011 won the Atelier Scholarship of the City of Zurich for New York, where his trio’s CD A Different Mind was recorded.

    André Pousaz

    André Pousaz, who was born in 1983 in Visp, began devoting himself at the age of nine to the double bass. Along with his classical training he studied the electric bass with Gilbert “Speedy” Jossen, ultimately enrolling in a program in the jazz department of the Lucerne University of Music, from which he graduated with distinction with a degree in performance. His mentors were Heiri Känzig, Wolfgang Zwiauer, and Herbie Kopf. In 2006 he won the Advancement Award of the Friedl Wald Foundation. André Pousaz has concertized across Europe, Russia, Bolivia, Colombia, China, Japan, and South Korea, collaborating with such jazz and pop greats as Christy Doran, Daniel Humair, Tobias Prei-sig, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Stefan Rusconi, Julian Sartorius, Nils Althaus, Freda Goodlett, and Heidi Happy. He is a member of the Swiss Army Big Band and the Swiss Jazz Orchestra.

    Claudio Puntin

    Born in 1965 in Zug, the clarinetist and composer Claudio Puntin initially trained as a goldsmith before studying music in Cologne and Rotterdam. Learning from Sergiu Celibidache was also a formative experience. He has performed in more than 80 countries, working with such varied artists as Carla Bley, Fred Frith, Sidsel Endresen, Hermeto Pascoal, Steve Reich, Steffen Schorn, Steve Swallow, and Ricardo Villalobos and with such ensembles as the Ensemble Modern, the ensemble Musikfabrik, and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. At present he is especially involved in his work with the Trio Ambiq. As a composer he has written music for film and theater productions, among them Sunset in Venice, winner of the German Short Film Prize in 1998. Puntin has garnered numerous awards, including the Golden Amadeus at the Musik-Kreativ Competition in Frankfurt (1993) and the WDR Jazz Prize (2004).
