Childhood

The 2018 Festival theme

Seldom will you encounter so many children in the KKL Luzern – but that should be no surprise, since the 2018 Summer Festival is devoted to the theme of “Childhood.” Which means that there will be many projects specifcally aimed at the youngest generation: the audience of tomorrow is meant to be the focus.

“artistes étoiles”

The violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja and the young cellist Jay Campbell are the two “artistes étoiles” we have invited: artists who follow their own distinctive paths and who radically re-examine the very identity of classical music in fresh ways.

“Cosmos Stockhausen”

Back to the music of the future: Karlheinz Stockhausen, one of the most signifcant and
influential composers of the 20th century, was born ninety years ago. The LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY is dedicating a major tribute to this sonic visionary who died in 2007. And will give the world premiere of Peter Eötvös’s ReadingMalevich, a major new orchestral score.

A relaxed way to enjoy LUCERNE FESTIVAL

LUCERNE FESTIVAL is more than the symphony concerts that take place in the evening. It also means the open-air concerts on the shore of Lake Lucerne, live performance acts in a loung club setting, talks, and 40min, the series of short concerts: these make the entire city reverberate with the Festival mood.

40min

More than a musical appetizer and yet not as long as a complete concert: set aside 40 minutes to enjoy some music.

Master Classes

LUCERNE FESTIVAL was never a mere way station. Ever since the Festival was founded, the great musicians who have performed here have always regarded Lucerne as a refuge, far removed from the hubbub of routine teaching, where they can share and pass on their knowledge and experience to the younger generation – from Edwin Fischer, Wolfgang Schneiderhan, and Rafael Kubelík to today.
