A head start on the Beethoven Year: to open the Piano Festival, Rudolf Buchbinder and the Festival Strings Lucerne will perform all five piano concertos by Ludwig van Beethoven, whose 250th birthday the music world celebrates in 2020.
Igor Levit continues his major Beethoven cycle: Levit is performing all 32 of the master’s piano sonatas in Lucerne in 2019 and 2020. After starting off the cycle in summer, he will return to the Piano Festival to play such works as the Appassionata. With Levit, the spirit of Beethoven is in very good hands!
Of course we are interested in how the art of piano playing is being passed on to the next generation of piano virtuosos. So we are presenting three debuting artists who, we believe, will influence the piano scene in future.
As part of the Debut series, Claire Huangci, Danae Dörken, and Alexander Ullman will show us who today’s emerging stars are.
LUCERNE FESTIVAL is a place where different generations can exchange ideas. Renowned artists encounter young talents in master classes that allow them to pass on their knowledge and experience. The British pianist Peter Hill, a specialist in the work of such composers as Olivier Messiaen, will be a guest artist at the Piano Festival and will give live lessons that are open to all interested auditors.
