Power

The 2019 Festival theme

The theme of the 2019 Summer Festival in Lucerne is “Power” – arguably the most controversial topic we face.

Leonidas Kavakos

“Artiste étoile”

Technique and spirited playing: the master violinist Leonidas Kavakos, Greece’s most significant classical music export since Maria Callas, commands both. And you can look forward to spectacular highlights from him in the summer of 2019 as our “artiste étoile.”

Program Overview

Thomas Kessler

composer-in-residence

The Swiss Thomas Kessler fuses rap with contemporary music and supplies orchestral musicians with iPads and speakers so that they can modulate their live sound electronically: an incredibly original and tirelessly curious composer.

The Mozart-Da Ponte Cycle

with Teodor Currentzis

Explosive: Teodor Currentzis conducts Mozart’s three operatic masterpieces to librettos by Da Ponte – Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Così fan tutte – works that shed light on different facets of the Festival theme of “Power.”

Tonhalle

Luzern, Europaplatz 1b

The Henosode Quartet has custom-built its very own concert hall ("Tonhalle"), right in front of the KKL Luzern. It measures 2.75 x 5.25 x 2 meters, no bigger, no smaller. So the space available is limited. But the musicians no longer want to confine themselves to the marginalized status enjoyed only by connoisseurs...

A relaxed way to enjoy LUCERNE FESTIVAL

LUCERNE FESTIVAL is more than the symphony concerts that take place in the evening. It also means the open-air concerts on the shore of Lake Lucerne, talks, and 40min, the series of short concerts: these make the entire city reverberate with the Festival mood.

40min

More than a musical appetizer and yet not as long as a complete concert: set aside 40 minutes to enjoy some music.

Master Classes

LUCERNE FESTIVAL was never a mere way station. Ever since the Festival was founded, the great musicians who have performed here have always regarded Lucerne as a refuge, far removed from the hubbub of routine teaching, where they can share and pass on their knowledge and experience to the younger generation – from Edwin Fischer, Wolfgang Schneiderhan, and Rafael Kubelík to today.
