The violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja and the young cellist Jay Campbell, a graduate of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY, are the two “artistes étoiles” we have invited: artists who follow their own distinctive paths and who radically re-examine the very identity of classical music in fresh ways.
“I hate it when something is done in art that’s banal. There’s enough of that in everyday life.” A characteristic statement from Kopatchinskaja: the Moldova-born violinist is no fan of the artistically rote or of well-trodden paths. Instead, she radically redefines the identity of music – an ideal “artiste étoile” for the summer of 2017.
Cultivating the newest generation of artists has long been a major focus for LUCERNE FESTIVAL, but the 2017 Summer Festival takes this emphasis to an unprecedented level: The American cellist Jay Campbell, a graduate of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY, is the youngest musician ever to be chosen to serve as “artiste étoile.”
