Piano Festival

16.11.-24.11. 2019

    Participants in the Master Class
    Peter Hill  director

Selected works from the Baroque up through classic Modernism, with focuses on J.S. Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier and the piano works of Olivier Messiaen

“Outstanding technique, a genuine poet: I’m a passionate admirer of his piano playing.” Olivier Messiaen raved about Peter Hill, with whom he worked closely in the 1980s, when Hill recorded his piano works. The British pianist is – and this has largely to do with his studies with Nadia Boulanger – a masterful interpreter of 20th-century music. His recordings of the works of Stravinsky, the Second Viennese School, and Messiaen have set standards. But he has also devoted himself intensively to the classic repertoire, such as Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier. In addition, Hill is an active music writer and has published several studies as well as a biography of Messiaen that received an award from the Paris Académie des Beaux-Arts. In short, the participants in the Lucerne Master Class will benefit not only from Peter Hill’s practical experience as a pianist but also from his profound knowledge of the works they explore. And since the sessions are as usual open to the public, this holds for all interested auditors as well.
