    Every summer the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY offers support to young conductors, and this year for the first time this will be in the context of a Conducting Fellowship: the participants stay on for a three-week period. They can observe Matthias Pintscher and Susanna Mälkki in rehearsal and play an active role in Wolfgang Rihm’s Composer Seminar. The heart of the Conducting Fellowship will still remain the Master Class in Conducting, which is open to the public. Under the guidance of Alan Gilbert, the music director of the New York Philharmonic, the young orchestral conductors will rehearse complex scores of the 20th century. Festival audiences meanwhile benefits from valuable insights into the art of conducting – and will get to know two works in depth: Berg’s Violin Concerto and Schoenberg’s symphonic poem Pelleas und Melisande, which Gilbert himself will then conduct on 4 September.


    Founded in 2003 by the composer and conductor Pierre Boulez and the Festival’s Executive and Artistic Director Michael Haefliger, the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY is an internationally unique training institution devoted to the music of the  20th and 21st centuries. Some 130 young, highly gifted musicians from all over the world have convened there every summer since then to extensively study contemporary scores and Modernist classics in daily rehearsals, workshops, and lessons, which they subsequently perform. More than 1,000 graduates have attended the Academy over the past 14 years, many of whom have even participated for several summers. Since 2016 the German composer Wolfgang Rihm has served as Artistic Director, with Matthias Pintscher as Principal Conductor alongside him. They are supported by a team of internationally renowned performers of contemporary music who work as instrumental coaches. Under this new leadership, the Academy has expanded its offerings. In 2017 the Composer Seminar is taking place for a second time; here young composers discuss their works with Wolfgang Rihm and have a practical opportunity to rehearse them with ensembles of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ALUMNI. The Master Class in Conducting was expanded into a Conducting Fellowship that offers its students a chance to follow the work of the Academy over a three-week period. This summer the Orchestra of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY is performing three symphony concerts under Heinz Holliger and Matthias Pintscher; with Pintscher it will tour to Cologne and the Hamburg Elbphilharmonie in September. The Academy students are also appearing in several ensemble concerts, such as programs for the Special Event Day on the theme of “Identity,” with composer-in-residence Michel van der Aa and “artistes étoiles” Jay Campbell and Patricia Kopatchinskaja, and as part of the 40min series.

    Alan Gilbert

    Alan Gilbert who was born in 1967, comes from a musical family: Both of his parents were violinists with the New York Philharmonic. While he was still a student at Harvard University, Gilbert was named director of the Harvard Bach Society. He continued his studies at the New England Conservatory of Music, the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, and the Juilliard School in New York. In 1994 Gilbert took first prize at the Concours de Genève and also won the Georg Solti Prize. He assumed his first leadership position in 2000 with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, which he helmed until 2008 and where he remains Honorary Conductor. He also served from 2003 to 2006 as Music Director of Santa Fe Opera. In 2009 Gilbert began his tenure heading the New York Philharmonic. He is the first native New Yorker to have held this position. Through such initiatives as the CONTACT! series, an annual composer residency, and the NY PHIL BIENNIAL, he has enhanced the Philharmonic’s focus on contemporary music. Gilbert made his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2008 conducting John Adams’s Doctor Atomic, and in 2015 he led the first American performance of George Benjamin’s Written on Skin at Lincoln Center. Gilbert has conducted such acclaimed ensembles as the Boston Symphony Orchestra, the Philadelphia and Cleveland Orchestras, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, the Berlin Philharmonic, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra; in the 2015-16 season he performed his first engagements at La Scala in Milan, the Staatskapelle Dresden, and the London Symphony Orchestra. Alan Gilbert has won two Grammy Awards and has been a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2014. He is Director of Conducting and Orchestral Studies at the Juilliard School.

    LUCERNE FESTIVAL on 7 and 8 September 2014, when he led the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra in a pair of concerts, conducting Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony and Mahler’s Third.
