The call for a role of direct political engagement by art and culture is an old one. That culture should be critically involved in political discussions is something on which everyone agrees – at least so long as the criticism is not too rigorous. In fact, art and culture work from a perception that differs from that of political pragmatism, which is often influenced by legal reality. In this sense, art and culture expand the discourse. They offer surprising perspectives and make the basic human experiences tangible. Art and culture thus work as a counteracting force to the power of the actual, perhaps even as a kind of “fifth estate.” In return for this, the political sphere rewards the arts by public promotion of culture. Or do these two things have nothing to do with each other? Guests from the spheres of politics and culture will discuss the relationship between culture and politics.
