    “The Russians Are Coming”

Russian piano music belongs among the highlights of the virtuoso Romantic repertoire, and composers like Tchaikovsky and, somewhat later, Rachmaninoff coaxed from the instrument a rich abundance of sonorities, colors, and associations. Alongside this the Russians have contributed such other masters as the visionary Alexander Scriabin and – in some instances with the claim of essaying a new “objectivity” – Sergei Prokofiev, whose nine sonatas comprise a treasury of new discoveries and pianistic adventures. Other personalities like Nikolai Medtner, Mili Balakirev, and, finally, the outstanding Dmitri Shostakovich complete the spectrum. Great Russian pianists have knowingly devoted and continue to devote themselves to this challenge with gusto. The range spans from Gilels and Richter to Pletnev, Boris Beresowski, Lilya Zilberstein, and Daniil Trifonov and is being carried forward by young talents with spirit and with a sense of the joy of playing. This series offers an overview of works and performances with significant examples (but also some surprising ones) from the concert hall and the studio.
