    “Farinelli and His Times”

    A woman plays a man who appears on stage as a woman: Cecilia Bartoli’s new program, “Farinelli and His Times,” takes the idea of the “trouser role” to an extreme. She slips into the role of a singer who was arguably the most-famous castrato in the history of music and whose voice so enraptured contemporaries that they thought he must be an angel. Or the devil. “Farinelli was very virtuosic, with a range extending to the highest and lowest notes,” says Bartoli. “But what I find even more amazing is his personality and his gift for touching people: with very simple and melancholy melodies.” Singing arias composed for Farinelli, however, presents the mezzo-soprano with a real challenge: the range is enormous, and the nearly endless melodic phrases require a huge amount of breath – and along with the usual fluid coloratura fluency, she also needs to be able to draw on reserves for dramatic moments. But Cecilia Bartoli understands that her voice has developed: “My instrument is like a good red wine, barrique. I began as a young white wine.”

    The Baroque ensemble Les Musiciens du Prince – Monaco was founded in the spring of 2016 on the initiative of Cecilia Bartoli at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo and is supported by Prince Albert II and his sister Caroline Princess of Hanover. It brings together leading international musicians who are intimately familiar with the tradition of European court music from the 17th to the 19th centuries. Their repertoire ranges from music by such Baroque composers as Antonio Vivaldi and George Frideric Handel to the operas of Gioachino Rossini; another focus of the ensemble is on rarities and rediscovered works. Les Musiciens du Prince made their first European tour with Cecilia Bartoli in the year in which they were founded. They performed at the Salzburg Whitsun and Summer Festivals in 2017, presenting Handel’s Ariodante and Rossini’s La donna del lago; in 2018 they again appeared in Salzburg with a concert featuring the Mexican tenor Javier Camarena, which was also recorded for CD release. They plan to tour with a Vivaldi program in the late fall of 2018 to Martigny, Luxembourg, Brussels, Amsterdam, Paris, Cologne, Dortmund, Hamburg, and Bremen. For this Lucerne performance of Rossini’s La cenerentola, the Musiciens du Prince are accompanied by the men of the Chœur de l’Opéra de Monte-Carlo. The choir, which has been conducted by Stefano Visconti since 2007, not only participates in opera productions on the Monégasque stage but also performs the choral symphonic repertoire and works of sacred music. For example, the singers recently participated in concerts featuring Liszt’s A Faust Symphony, Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, Schoenberg’s A Survivor from Warsaw, and Haydn’s Missa in tempore belli.

    Gianluca Capuano

    Gianluca Capuano, who was born in Milan in 1968, studied organ, composition, and conducting at the conservatory of his native city and also completed a degree in philosophy at the University of Milan. He soon began specializing in early music and historically informed performance practice as a conductor, organist, and continuo player throughout Europe, the United States, Russia, and Japan. He has worked with such artists as Michael Chance, Emma Kirkby, Cecilia Bartoli, Max Emanuel Cencic, Philippe Jaroussky, Diego Fasolis, and Lorenzo and Vittorio Ghielmi. Capuano founded the ensemble Il canto di Orfeo in 2006, with which he has since worked on the Baroque and Classical repertoire. He has also performed with this formation at La Scala in Milan, where he introduced himself with Raskatov’s A Dog’s Heart in 2013 and participated in a production of Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Die Soldaten in 2015. Together with the Concerto Köln, he has recorded Leonardo Vinci’s Artaserse and has also presented the work at Cologne Opera. He has led Bellini’s Norma, with Cecilia Bartoli in the leading role, at the Edinburgh Festival, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, and the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, and this collaboration continued in 2017 at the Salzburg Festival, where he conducted Les Musiciens du Prince – Monaco in Handel’s Ariodante and Rossini’s La donna del lago. In the 2017-18 season, Gianluca Capuano was a guest artist at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe in Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito and in Nantes, France, in Monteverdi’s Poppea. Other credits include Spontini’s Le metamorfosi di Pasquale at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, Rossini’s La cenerentola at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo, and Cimarosa’s Il matrimonio segreto at Cologne Opera. Capuano is also artistic director of the “Musica negli horti” Festival, which takes place in Val d’Orcia eve-ry September.

    Cecilia Bartoli

    Cecilia Bartoli, a native of Rome, was trained by her mother Silvana Bazzoni. She made her operatic debut in 1987 and, in 1988, at the age of 22, worked with Nikolaus Harnoncourt on a production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte. At the very beginning of her career came encounters with Herbert von Karajan, Sir Georg Solti, and Da-niel Barenboim as well. For the past thirty years, Cecilia Bartoli has been performing at the most renowned opera houses and concert halls, as well as at the major international festivals. She began working with leading symphony orchestras and early music ensembles early in her career, including Les Arts Florissants, Concentus Musicus Wien, Il Giardino Armonico, Les Musiciens du Louvre, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, La Scintilla, and I Barocchisti. In 2016 she founded the Monaco-based orchestra Les Musiciens du Prince. Baroque literature, the work of Mozart, and bel canto are the focuses of her repertoire, and she has made a point of rediscovering many works that had fallen into oblivion. Since 2012 Bartoli has been artistic director of the Salzburg Whitsun Festival, where she has appeared in recent years as Bellini’s Norma, Rossini’s Cenerentola, Maria in Bernstein’s West Side Story, and Handel’s Ariodante, among others. In 2019 she performed the title role in Handel’s Alcina there, and in 2020 she will return as Norina in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale. Cecilia Bartoli’s CDs and DVDs have sold more than 12 million copies, and she has received no fewer than five Grammy Awards. Most recently, at the end of 2018, she released a Vivaldi album with the Ensemble Matheus under Jean-Christophe Spinosi. Among the many distinctions she has received are the Léonie Sonning Music Prize (2010), the Herbert von Karajan Music Prize (2012), and the Polar Music Prize (2016).
