    Lang Lang

The Chinese pianist Lang Lang was born in 1982 in Shenyang and started learning piano at the age of three. When he was nine, he began his professional training at the Conservatory in Beijing, continuing his studies with Gary Graffman in 1997 at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia. He experienced his international breakthrough in 1999, when he performed Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Since then he has appeared with leading orchestras all over the world, developing an especially intense partnership with such conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Gustavo Dudamel, and Sir Simon Rattle. Lang Lang has also achieved fame among listeners from outside the world of “classical” music devotees – all of his CDs have made it to the pop charts. In 2008 he performed at the Olympic Opening Ceremony in Beijing, and in 2011 he played a memorial concert in honor of the 200th birthday of Franz Liszt, which was broadcast live in 500 cinemas, and was additionally the star guest for the Last Night of the Proms, which was broadcast around the world. Lang Lang also regularly concertizes with artists from other musical spheres, such as with the jazz legend Herbie Hancock, dubstep dancer Marquese “Nonstop” Scott, and the hit singer Julio Iglesias. In 2014 he performed at the Grammy Awards ceremony with the band Metallica. Lang Lang makes music for state presidents, Nobel Prize winners, monarchs, and dignitaries, including such illustrious figures as Barack Obama, Queen Elizabeth II, and Pope Francis. Designated by the United Nations as a “Messenger of Peace” in 2013, the pianist is known for his social commitments as well, especially for the Lang Lang International Music Foundation, which he founded in 2008; as part of his educational program “Keys of Inspiration,” he has published the five-volume series Mastering the Piano. Lang Lang is an Exclusive Recording Artist of Deutsche Grammophon.
