In 2021, the American performance artist Elliot Reed developed a fascinating outdoor project for the JACK Quartet and Central Park in New York City. He is now working on a “Swiss version” of the project, Succulent Rust, for Lucerne Festival. This one-hour work begins with the idea of searching: the four quartet members and the participating soloists of the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra (LFCO) are spread out all over the grounds of Lucerne’s Glacier Garden, which contains the famous Lion Monument. The audience is invited to walk around the area with ears wide open, following the sounds and tracing out the musicians, who play live but without electronic amplification. Because it is impossible to perceive all of the sounds at the same time, each listener – depending on the route chosen – will have his or her own perspective on the performance and, in a sense, create his or her own work.
