    What does the guy on the podium really do? This is no simple question, for he (or she) does many things at the same time: he keeps the orchestra together, he ensures that an actual interpretation emerges from the playing of a work, and he motivates the musicians – in rehearsal and live concert alike. And he must command an excellent baton technique and an outstanding sense of hearing, as well as lucid interpretive ideas and a talent for communication. To train all of these abilities naturally requires practice. Which is easier said than done, since how does a young conductor come up with an entire orchestra? Bernard Haitink’s Easter season master class in conducting enables aspiring orchestra leaders to study central works of the canon. At the end they will know not only what a conductor does but – and this is even more important – what makes a good conductor.

    Festival Strings Lucerne

    Die Festival Strings Lucerne, die 1956 von Rudolf Baumgartner und Wolfgang Schneiderhan gegründet wurden, sind LUCERNE FESTIVAL mit alljährlichen Auftritten verbunden. Die Stammbesetzung um den Konzertmeister und Künstlerischen Leiter Daniel Dodds besteht aus siebzehn Streichersolisten und einem Cembalisten, kann aber bis zu einem 60-köpfigen Orchester erweitert werden, das auch sinfonisches Repertoire zur Aufführung bringt. Ihre besondere Klangkultur verdanken die «Strings» zum einen den Meisterinstrumenten aus den legendären Cremoneser Werkstätten Stradivari, Guarneri und Amati, die sich im Besitz des Ensembles befinden, zum anderen ihrer grossen Aufführungstradition. Denn von Anbeginn prägte die Zusammenarbeit mit prominenten Solisten das Profil des Ensembles. Yehudi Menuhin, David Oistrach, Pablo Casals, Wilhelm Kempff und Clara Haskil waren in seinen Konzerten zu hören, und auch heutige Stars wie Anne-Sophie Mutter, Mischa Maisky, Hélène Grimaud, Daniil Trifonov, Rudolf Buchbinder, Martin Grubinger sowie Renaud und Gautier Capuçon zählen zu den musikalischen Partnern. Im Sommer 2017 traten die «Strings» als erstes Schweizer Orchester in der neuen Hamburger Elbphilharmonie auf und gastierten beim Würzburger Mozartfest, beim Grafenegg Festival, im Amsterdamer Concertgebouw und im Kopenhagener Tivoli. In der Saison 2017/18 steht neben Auftritten in München, Stuttgart, Valencia und Alicante auch eine grosse Asien-Reise auf dem Programm, die das Ensemble nach Peking, Shanghai, Suzhou, Taipeh und Seoul führen wird. Sein Repertoire erstreckt sich vom Barock bis zur zeitgenössischen Musik; so gibt es im kommenden Sommer etwa ein gemeinsames Projekt mit dem Komponisten Brett Dean. Regelmässig veröffentlicht das Ensemble CD-Einspielungen; zuletzt erschien eine Aufnahme dreier Mozart-Violinkonzerte mit Arabella Steinbacher.

    Bernard Haitink

    Bernard Haitink was born in 1929 in Amsterdam. Trained as a violinist, he appeared on the podium for the first time in 1954 to conduct the Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestra. In 1956 he made his debut with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, which in 1961 appointed him Music Director; for 27 years he had full responsibility there. Haitink has also held leadership positions with the London Philharmonic Orchestra (1967–79), the Glyndebourne Festival (1977–88), the Royal Opera House in London (1987–2002), and the Staatskapelle Dresden (2002–04) and has served as Principal Conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (2006–10). As a guest conductor, Haitink has led such ensembles as the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. In the 2016-17 season he additionally worked with the London Symphony, the Orchestre National de France, the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, the Orchestra Mozart, and the Orchestra of La Scala Milan. Music of the 19th and early 20th centuries is the focus of his repertory. His interpretations of Bruckner, Mahler, and Shostakovich in particular have become benchmarks, but Haitink is equally well known for his performances of Viennese Classicism. In recent years at LUCERNE FESTIVAL Haitink has devoted himself to performing cycles of the complete symphonies and concertos of Beethoven, Brahms, and Schumann. He is also associated with the Festival in the realm of education through the master class in conducting that he has led annually at Easter since 2011. Haitink is an Honorary Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, a Knight of the British Empire, a Companion of Honour, and a member of the Order of the House of Orange-Nassau.  In 2017 he received the highest civil honor of his homeland when he was promoted to Commander of the Order of Lion of the Netherlands.
