    Young composers have it hard. Take when they write for an ensemble or orchestra. They set their best ideas down on paper, but who is there to play what it sounds like? LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY’s Composer Seminar provides a remedy. As the Academy’s new Artistic Director, Wolfgang Rihm introduced the Seminar in 2016, for he is quite familiar with the obstacles a composer faces at the beginning and knows what doesn’t function perfectly in the regular course of study. “Here composers can test their works with former Academy musicians,” he says about the concept. “But in the university, they usually first have to go a much longer route. Many instrument teachers insist on having their scores in hand as early as a half year before the performance.” For this summer Rihm has selected from among some 150 applicants those in particular “who can already produce a recognizably individual kind of work.”


    Since its founding in 2003, more than 1,200 instrumentalists, conductors, and composers from over 60 countries have passed through the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY’s training program. Among them are such renowned artists as the JACK and Mivos Quartets and the conductors Pablo Heras-Casado and Kevin John Edusei, as well as many musicians who are now members of internationally established orchestras, who perform in the field of chamber music and pursue experimental projects, or who teach at universities. A large number of them remain closely associated with the Festival as LUCERNE FESTIVAL ALUMNI. These are selected former participants in the Academy who return regularly to Lucerne, enriching the program with performances in the realm of contemporary music, in the “40min” series, and in productions for “Young,” the Festival’s program for young listeners; they additionally provide advice and support to current Academy students. Supported by the Alumni platform, they also keep in contact with each other in order to jointly realize projects of their own around the world. This has created a unique international network of young musicians. As their first project, the Alumni presented four world premieres in the 2013-14 season exploring the theme “Music at Risk” in New York, London, Beijing, Zurich, and Lucerne. Among highlights of the past years have been the three-part concert series “Ligeti Forward,” which they performed as part of the NY Phil Biennial in 2016 under the baton of Alan Gilbert. In 2017 they toured Germany and Switzerland with the Swiss jazz singer Andreas Schaerer and his band Hildegard Lernt Fliegen (The Big Wig). They joined with the Ensemble intercontemporain in March 2018 to perform Messiaen’s Des canyons aux étoiles in Paris, Brussels, and Luxembourg as well as at the Lucerne Easter Festival. In September 2019, they performed with Riccardo Chailly at the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg.

    Wolfgang Rihm

    The German composer Wolfgang Rihm, who has been Artistic Director of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY since the summer of 2016, was born in 1952 in Karlsruhe and began composing at an early age. While he was still a high school student, in 1968, he was accepted into Eugen Werner Velte’s composition class at the University of Music in Karlsruhe. He later continued his training with Karlheinz Stockhausen in Cologne (1972-73) and finally with Klaus Huber in Freiburg (1973–1976). At the University of Freiburg he additionally took seminars in musicology with Hans Heinrich Eggebrecht. A series of large-scale orchestral works  brought Wolfgang Rihm his international breakthrough in the late 1970s. Today he ranks among the most prolific and versatile composers of the present era and has created a multifaceted oeuvre that to date consists of more than 400 compositions, including nine works of music theater alone: Faust und Yorick (1976), Jakob Lenz (1977-78), Die Hamletmaschine (1983-86), Oedipus (1987), Die Eroberung von Mexico (1987-91), Séraphin (1994), Das Gehege (2006), Proserpina (2009), and Dionysos, which received its world premiere in 2010 at the Salzburg Festival. Since 1985 Rihm has been a professor of composition at the University of Music in Karlsruhe. He has long enjoyed a close relationship with LUCERNE FESTIVAL: he was featured as composer-in-residence on the programming in 1997, and in the following year his orchestral work IN-SCHRIFT was performed at the opening of the KKL Luzern; additional commissions have followed, including the symphony Nähe fern (2011-12), the Horn Concerto (2014), and his Gruss-Moment to mark the 90th birthday of  Pierre Boulez. Wolfgang Rihm, who has also published several volumes of essays and interviews, is a member of numerous academies and has received many prestigious awards, including the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize (2003), the Robert Schumann Prize (2014), the Grawemeyer Award (2015), and the European Church Music Prize (2017). He is a Commandeur dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, has been awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit with Star of the Federal Republic of Germany, and is a member of the order “Pour le Mérite.”

    Der Komponist und Regisseur Michel van der Aa, «composer-in-residence» beim Luzerner Sommer-Festival 2017, wurde 1970 im niederländischen Oss (Nord-Brabant) geboren. Am Königlichen Konservatorium von Den Haag liess er sich zunächst zum Toningenieur ausbilden, anschliessend studierte er Komposition bei Diderik Wagenaar, Gilius van Bergeijk und Louis Andriessen. 2002 ging er an die New Yorker Filmakademie, wo er das Fach Regie belegte; ausserdem absolvierte er 2007 am Director’s Lab des Lincoln Center Theater einen Spezialkurs in Bühnenregie. Für Aufsehen sorgte van der Aa vor allem mit seinen Musiktheaterwerken: 2002 entstand die Kammeroper One, die Barbara Hannigan zur Uraufführung brachte, 2005/06 folgte After Life, 2008 das Pessoa-Projekt The Book of Disquiet. Seine jüngsten Bühnenproduktionen waren Sunken Garden (2011–13) auf ein Textbuch von David Mitchell und Blank Out (2015) nach Ingrid Jonker. Für die Cellistin Sol Gabetta schuf Michel van der Aa das intermediale Cellokonzert Up-Close (2010), für die Geigerin Janine Jansen ein Violinkonzert (2014). Eine enge Verbindung unterhält er zum Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdem, das ihn für sechs Jahre, von 2011 bis 2017, als «Hauskomponisten» verpflichtete. Van der Aas Werke werden von renommierten Ensembles wie der musikFabrik, dem Ensemble intercontemporain, dem Ensemble Modern, dem Freiburger Barockorchester, dem BBC Symphony Orchestra, dem Los Angeles Philharmonic, dem Philharmonia Orchestra oder dem ASKO|Schoenberg Ensemble aufgeführt. Sie waren bei den Donaueschinger Musiktagen und der Biennale von Venedig, beim Festival d’Automne in Paris und beim Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival zu hören. Michel van der Aa wurde mit dem Gaudeamus-, dem Hindemith- und dem Kagel-Preis ausgezeichnet. 2013 wurde ihm der Grawemeyer Award, 2015 der Johannes Vermeer Award verliehen.
