    Sounds and colors: for Olivier Messiaen, who experienced synesthesia, these belonged inseparably together – which is exactly what made him one of the 20th-century composers most sensitive to timbre. With her lighting design, the British artist Ann Veronica Janssens will explore Messiaen’s ideas of sound and color. The starting point is one of his most expansive scores. Des canyons aux étoiles, written to mark the bicentennial celebration of American independence in 1976, was inspired by the sublime landscape of the state of Utah. In this twelve-movement work, Messiaen guides listeners from the desert to the stars, taking them on a journey to Bryce Canyon National Park – interspersing his nearly 100-minute sonic journey with the songs of more than 80 species of birds. The experience of nature and mystical praise of God are fused into an overwhelming musical spectacle of colors, whose world premiere in 1974 made such an impression that an entire mountain massif was named after the composer: Mount Messiaen in southern Utah.

    Ensemble intercontemporain

    Founded in 1976 by Pierre Boulez with support from the French Minister of Culture at the time, Michel Guy, the Ensemble intercontemporain consists of 31 soloists who are dedicated exclusively to music of the 20th and 21st centuries. As part of this mission, they work in close collaboration with composers to explore new instrumental techniques and additionally realize cross-disciplinary and cross-genre projects, such as those in cooperation with IRCAM in Paris. Following Boulez, who was the director until 1978, Peter Eötvös headed the ensemble for twelve years; he was succeeded by David Robertson (1992–99), Jonathan Nott (2000–05), and Susanna Mälkki (2006–13). Since September 2013 the composer Matthias Pintscher has served as Music Director. Every year the Ensemble intercontemporain commissions new works, gives world premieres, and is moreover active in the area of youth work and continuing education – through children’s concerts; workshops for students; and courses for instrumentalists, conductors, and composers. It is also involved with projects aimed at introducing a wide audience to contemporary music. The Ensemble, which performs throughout France and at the leading international festivals and concert series for contemporary music, makes its home in the new Philharmonie de Paris. Since 2003 its members have taught at the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY. The Ensemble intercontemporain is supported financially by the French Ministère de la Culture et de la Communication and by the City of Paris.

    Ensemble of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ALUMNI

    Ever since it was founded in 2003, the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY has provided training to more than 1,000 highly talented young instrumentalists, conductors, and composers from around the world. To date the alumni have included such renowned artists as the JACK Quartet and the conductors Pablo Heras-Casado and Kevin John Edusei, as well as many musicians who today are members of internationally accomplished orchestras,  who perform in chamber music and experimental projects, or who teach at conservatories. A large portion of them remain closely associated with the Festival. Selected former Academy students come back to Lucerne regularly as LUCERNE FESTIVAL ALUMNI. They enrich the programming through performances in the field of contemporary music, in the 40min series, or in productions by LUCERNE FESTIVAL YOUNG; they are moreover available to provide  help and advice to current Academy students. Supported by the Alumni platform, they keep in contact with each other in order to execute their own projects around the world. The result is a uniquely international network of young musicians. For their first project together, in the 2013-14 season the Alumni gave four world premieres involving the theme “Music at Risk” in New York, London, Beijing, Zurich, and Lucerne. During the past summer they participated in another “marathon of premieres” in Lucerne, and in June 2016 an ensemble of Alumni performed as part of the NY Phil Biennial in a three-part concert series, “Ligeti Forward,” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, which was conducted by Alan Gilbert. This year the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ALUMNI’s projects include a tour with the Swiss jazz singer  Andreas Schaerer performing his project “The Big Wig.”

    Matthias Pintscher

    Matthias Pintscher has been closely associated with the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY since 2016 as its Principal Conductor. Born in 1971 in Marl in North Rhine-Westphalia, he regards composing and conducting as complementary spheres of his artistic work. He studied composition with Giselher Klebe and Manfred Trojahn; Hans Werner Henze was also among his mentors, as was Peter Eötvös, who additionally taught him conducting. Pintscher quickly advanced to become one of the most successful composers of his generation: premieres of his music theater works Thomas Chatterton and L’Espace dernier were given by the Dresden Semperoper and the Opéra National de Paris, respectively, and his orchestral works have been premiered by the Berlin and New York Philharmonics, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, and the Cleveland Orchestra. As a conductor, Pintscher commands a wide repertoire, with a special focus on works of the 19th and 20th centuries. He has conducted such ensembles as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Cleveland Orchestra, the New York and Los Angeles Philharmonics, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Berlin, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra, and the Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia; he is artist-in-association with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. In 2013 Pintscher began his tenure as Music Director of the Ensemble intercontemporain in Paris, with which he undertook an Asian tour in the 2016-17 season. He was composer-in-residence and artist-in-focus at the new Hamburg Elbphilharmonie for its inaugural season. This position included a performance with the Orchestra of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY, as well as the world premiere of his latest work, Shirim, with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra under Christoph Eschenbach. Pintscher teaches composition at the Juilliard School in New York.

    LUCERNE FESTIVAL debut on 13 August 2010 with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in a program of works by Fauré, Chausson, Wagner, and Ravel.

    Der Schlagzeuger Samuel Favre, Jahrgang 1979, stammt aus Lyon. Am Regionalkonservatorium seiner Heimatstadt erhielt er von Alain Londeix den ersten Unterricht auf den verschiedenen Perkussionsinstrumenten und wurde 1996, zum Abschluss seiner dortigen Lehrjahre, mit der Goldmedaille ausgezeichnet. Anschliessend wechselte Favre ans Lyoner Nationalkonservatorium für Musik und Tanz und absolvierte die Klassen von Georges Van Gucht und Jean Geoffroy. Im Jahr 2000 bestand er seine Künstlerische Reifeprüfung mit Auszeichnung. Weitere praktische Erfahrungen sammelte er an der Akademie des Festivals von Aix-en-Provence sowie am Centre Acanthes, einem Ausbildungsinstitut für zeitgenössische Musik, das dem Pariser IRCAM angegliedert ist. In dieser Zeit begann auch Favres Zusammenarbeit mit Camille Rocailleux, einem Schlagzeuger und Komponisten, der ihn einlud, gemeinsam mit der Tanzkompanie ARCOSM das Projekt Echoa herauszubringen. Diese Performance, die einen Brückenschlag zwischen Musik, Tanz und darstellender Kunst wagt, wurde seither mehr als vierhundert Mal auf französischen und internationalen Bühnen aufgeführt. Seit 2001 ist Samuel Favre Mitglied im Ensemble intercontemporain, mit dem er zahlreiche CDs eingespielt hat, darunter Le Marteau sans Maître von Pierre Boulez sowie Unsuk Chins Doppelkonzert für Klavier, Schlagzeug und Ensemble.

    Mit dem Ensemble intercontemporain konzertiert Samuel Favre jeden Sommer bei LUCERNE FESTIVAL.
