What concentrated expertise in contemporary music! Every summer, about 100 young, talented musicians travel to Lucerne to devote themselves exclusively to works of the 20th and 21st centuries: music about which they are passionate and to which they are entirely dedicated. The LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY is a master school at the highest level, a place for creative exchange, a musical think tank. Nowhere else is there anything comparable. Under the guidance of renowned new music specialists, the participants rehearse orchestral, ensemble, and chamber concerts. The program also offers the Composer Seminar with Wolfgang Rihm, the Academy’s Artistic Director, and a Conducting Fellowship.

In the summer of 2020, the Academy students will work with the conductors Sylvain Cambreling, Lin Liao, and David Robertson; the soprano Juliet Fraser; and the pianist Nicolas Hodges. They will meet with composer-in-residence Rebecca Saunders and premiere her brand new piano concerto as well as other works by Saunders and will moreover focus on modern classics by Igor Stravinsky and Anton Webern. In addition, they will launch the concert series “Cosmos Boulez,” which is slated to soon three years. In this series, they will rediscover important works by the Academy’s late founder Pierre Boulez that he withdrew during his lifetime.
