Frankfurt native Petra Lang was educated in Darmstadt and in Mainz and currently receives coaching from Ingrid Bjoner. She began her career in the opera studio of the Bavarian Staatsoper and developed the cornerstones of her repertoire as an ensemble member of the Dortmund and Braunschweig opera companies. In 1997 she won international recognition for her Brangäne in Tristan; she went on to perform this role in New York under Eve Queler and then in Geneva with Armin Jordan, in Dresden with Semyon Bychkov, in London with Bernard Haitink, in Amsterdam with Simon Rattle, in Paris with Myung-Whun Chung, and in Vienna as well as in Bayreuth with Christian Thielemann. The mezzo-soprano’s other signature roles include Kundry in Parsifal, Sieglinde in Die Walküre, and Judith in Duke Bluebeard’s Castle. For her recording of Berlioz’s Les Troyens, Petra Lang received a Grammy Award, two BRIT Awards, and the German Record Critics’ Prize.
