Jens Peter Maintz  

Cellist Jens Peter Maintz, a native of Hamburg, studied with David Geringas and participated in master classes with Heinrich Schiff, Boris Pergamenschikow, and Siegfried Palm. In 1994 he won the ARD Music Competition in Munich and shortly after was appointed principal cellist with the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, where he remained until 2004. Since then he has held a professorship at the University of the Arts in Berlin. His career as a soloist has featured collaborations with such conductors as Vladimir Ashkenazy, Herbert Blomstedt, Marek Janowski, and Franz Welser-Möst in performances that have also included many works by contemporary composers.  For several years he was a member of the Trio Fontenay; he has also played chamber music with the Artemis, Casal, and Auryn Quartets as well as with Kolja Blacher, Isabelle Faust, Janine Jansen, Hélène Grimaud, and Wolfram Christ. Since 2006 Maintz has been principal cellist of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA.
