Baritone Dietrich Henschel, a native of Berlin, received his vocal education at the Munich Musikhochschule and in master classes with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. In 1997 he began his international career with two opera productions in which he performed the title role: Henze’s Der Prinz von Homburg at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Busoni’s Doktor Faust at the National Opera of Lyon. Since then he has performed at the opera houses of Paris as well as in Munich, Brussels, Amsterdam, Madrid, and Zurich and has been a guest artist at the Salzburg, Aix-en-Provence, Bregenz, and Florence festivals. His operatic repertoire ranges from Monteverdi, Mozart, and Wagner to contemporary works and includes such roles as Berg’s Wozzeck oder Debussy’s Pelléas. Dietrich Henschel is equally successful as a lied singer and has partnered with John Eliot Gardiner, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Philippe Herreweghe, Kent Nagano, Zubin Mehta, Simon Rattle, and Christian Thielemann. He has recently begun appearing as a conductor himself, leading concerts in Paris, Rouen, and Brussels.
