Lucerne Festival Academy

Composer Project

Pierre Boulez with a student of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY

September 2011 – September 2013

Pierre Boulez | Artistic Director

One guiding principle of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY is to foster the relationship among performers, conductors, and composers in order to enhance the performance of 20th- and 21st-century music.

To reach this goal, the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY will commission two large-scale orchestral works from young composers.

The compositional process will extend over two years. Pierre Boulez will consult with the composers in an advisory capacity at various stages of their work. At the end of the project’s first year and as part of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY 2012, fragments or sections of each new work will be studied and rehearsed with the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY Orchestra. These rehearsals will give the composers a unique opportunity to try out different orchestrations and compositional variants with the Academy’s orchestra. The two new works will then be premiered during the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY 2013.
