In 1998, the last time that Yehudi Menuhin presided over the violin competition founded by him, he gave the first prize to Chinese musician Zhi-Jong Wang, who was 15 at the time. But the young violinist renounced the quick path to fame and continued to pursue her studies without interruption, most recently with Kolja Blacher in Berlin, whom she has meanwhile been assisting as a teacher herself. In addition, she has proceeded cautiously to establish an international career, performing with the Orchestre National de France, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, and the Konzerthausorchester Berlin. Zhi-Jong Wang, who is an enthusiastic reader of Asian philosophers and deeply interested in painting and history, finds it important to look beyond the confines of her own discipline. For that reason her Lucerne debut not only features highly virtuosic gems but includes, at the outset, a work knowingly geared to the festival theme of “Faith”: Arvo Pärt’s “Fratres,” which portrays the cosmic “musica mundana,” the music of the spheres.
