"Manfred" Symphony in B minor, Op. 58
This evening spans the entire Christian cosmos, heaven and hell—and in the middle is the worldly concertgoer, who can reflect on which direction his or her path will one day lead. Olivier Messiaen celebrates a musical resurrection in “L’Ascension,” his four symphonic meditations from 1935, which still show the influence of Impressionism. Vladimir Jurowski, who made a brilliant debut at LUCERNE FESTIVAL last year, juxtaposes this vision with two adaptations of Lord Byron’s dramatic poem “Manfred” that explore the depths of a tormented and cursed soul. The scandalous hero is condemned to eternal restlessness after an incestuous love affair and the early death of his sister, for which he is partly to blame, and finally arrives in the subterranean palace of Arimanes, the Prince of Darkness.
