The 12 Cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker | Annette Dasch soprano

Concert to Celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the 12 Cellists

Compositions by Jean Françaix, Sofia Gubaidulina, Astor Piazzolla, Maurice Ravel, Robert Schumann, and others

The 12 Cellists celebrate a milestone anniversary—and Lucerne joins in the festivities. In 1972, exactly forty years ago, the idea of founding such an ensemble came up when the cello section of the Berlin Philharmonic recorded Julius Klengel’s “Hymnus für zwölf Violoncelli” (“Hymn for 12 Cellos”) for a radio production. Hearing the result, “the 12” wondered if just about anything could be arranged for this sort of ensemble and then decided to form a permanent group to perform going forward. They have inspired audiences ever since with clever adaptations of classics and with contemporary works written exclusively for them, but also with tango, chansons, and jazz. These are musicians who pull out all the stops of their art, sometimes presenting a serious demeanor and sometimes one full of joviality. They dazzle with their virtuosity and spirit but aren’t afraid of indulging unrestrainedly in feelings. Music without dogma and without borders: what more admirable credo could you wish for this summer?
