“Moses und Aron.” Concert performance
In 1898 Arnold Schoenberg left the Jewish community in Vienna and was baptized. Yet in the face of the anti-Semitic hostility that he was increasingly forced to endure in the 1920s, he began to scrutinize his identity more closely, finally returning in July 1933, just before he began his exile in America, to the faith of his ancestors. The composition of “Moses und Aron” flanked this development. At first Schoenberg conceived the work as an oratorio before deciding to give it the form of an opera. The first two acts were written between 1930 and 1932. Until his death in 1951, Schoenberg repeatedly attempted to complete the score with a third act, though he never managed to do so. The incomprehensible nature of the divine, around which this pivotal work of modernism revolves, is mirrored by the fragmentary aspect of the score.
